ABOUT ME

Sami Anguaya is a Toronto-based singer and composer interested in creating music that blurs genre lines. A two-time graduate of the University of Toronto’s Composition program (MusBac 2020 & MMus 2022), Sami’s work has been commissioned and performed by the Exultate Chamber Singers, the Modern Sound Collective, The University of Toronto Wind Ensemble, and by indie film-makers and game developers.

Sami’s music has been characterized as driving, engaging, and vibrant. Frequently drawn to groove-based and popular styles for inspiration, Sami composes with a rich, rhythmic style that attracts listeners from all areas of music.

Sami’s graduate work focused on studying the pre-colonial woodwind techniques of his Kichwa heritage (Ecuador), and explored methods of developing meaningful collaboration between Kichwa music and Western ensembles. His work also experimented with vocal performance techniques that embody music aesthetics found in Kichwa music.

Sami’s work has received recognition through the University of Toronto’s Lothar Klein Fellowship in Advanced Composition, the William Irving Fairclough Graduating Scholarship, the Ontario Graduate Scholarship, and most recently, the Tecumseh Sherman Rogers Graduating Award—awarded to a graduating student who is deemed to have the greatest potential to make an important contribution to the field of music.
