Sueño Despierto is a setting of a poem with the same title by José Martí. The piece describes the experiences of a daydreamer, beginning with a wide sweeping accompaniment and a lilting melody. As the piece progresses, strange modal harmonies and eerie passages reveal the dark side of these dreams, eventually leading to the climax. The piece concludes with the dreamer changed, now aware of both the uplifting and startling side of their dreams. Sueño Despierto was premiered by the composer at the inaugural Toronto SongSlam in 2019.
